What Happens After an ADHD Diagnosis?

For many families, receiving an ADHD diagnosis brings a sense of clarity. Difficulties that may have previously felt confusing or frustrating often begin to make more sense when viewed through a neurodevelopmental lens.

An ADHD diagnosis is not simply a label — it is a starting point for understanding how your child learns, focuses and regulates emotions, and identifying the supports that may help them thrive.

At Elevate Psychology, we work with families to develop practical next steps tailored to each child’s needs, strengths and environment.

Understanding Your Child’s Strengths and Challenges

Following assessment, we provide a detailed feedback session to help parents understand:

  • How ADHD is presenting for their child
  • Their cognitive and behavioural profile
  • Areas of strength that can be supported and built upon
  • Situations where additional strategies may be helpful

Our goal is to ensure families leave the assessment process with clear, practical guidance, not just diagnostic information.

School Supports and Classroom Strategies

Many children benefit from adjustments within the school environment once attention differences are better understood.

Depending on the child’s needs, schools may consider supports such as:

  • Seating arrangements that reduce distractions
  • Breaking larger tasks into smaller steps
  • Additional time for certain tasks
  • Visual reminders or structured routines
  • Organisational support strategies

With your consent, the assessment report can be shared with your child’s school to help guide appropriate supports.

Therapy and Skill Development

Psychological support can help children develop skills that support attention, organisation and emotional regulation.

Common areas of focus include:

  • Executive functioning skills (planning, organisation and task initiation, time management)
  • Emotional regulation and frustration tolerance
  • Building confidence and self-esteem
  • Social skills and peer relationships

Therapy can also support parents with strategies to help manage attention and behavioural challenges at home.

Depending on your child’s profile, we may recommend referrals to Speech pathologists, Occupational Therapists or other providers rather than psychological support.

Medical Consultation (If Appropriate)

For some children, families may choose to consult with a paediatrician or child psychiatrist to discuss whether medication may be helpful as part of a broader treatment plan.

Psychologists do not prescribe medication for ADHD. Medication decisions are always made by medical specialists and are considered alongside behavioural, educational and psychological supports.

Our assessment report can assist your GP or paediatrician in determining appropriate next steps.

Ongoing Support for Your Child and Family

ADHD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental profile, but with the right supports many children develop effective strategies and thrive academically, socially and emotionally. As children develop and manage challenges, often significant strengths associated with ADHD (e.g. holistic thinking, pattern recognition, bravery, high performance in favourite subjects) will emerge.

Following assessment, families may choose to access:

  • Individual therapy for their child
  • Parent guidance sessions
  • School consultation
  • Periodic reviews to support developmental transitions

At Elevate Psychology, we aim to provide clear guidance, practical strategies and ongoing support as children grow and their needs evolve.

When to Seek Further Support

You may consider additional support if your child is experiencing:

  • Increasing school frustration or avoidance
  • Ongoing difficulties completing tasks independently
  • Emotional outbursts linked to overwhelm or stress
  • Low confidence related to academic performance
  • Anxiety or low mood persists

Early support can make a meaningful difference in helping children develop the skills and confidence they need.
